Leigh Wright

A focus for Wright is achieving historical and visual records of wilderness with great attention to detail.  Wright comments “As New Zealanders who love and appreciate our native vegetation” Wright hopes that his works will bring the viewer “a sense of familiarity and appreciation of our special environment”.  Describing his work process Wright comments “Dream it, observe it, and draw it.”  After attending Hamilton Teachers Training College, and majoring in art, Leigh taught in various schools in the Eastern North Island.  A love in his youth was time in the bush of the Urewera National Park where he was introduced to deer hunting and shot his first deer at eleven years of age.  These visits into the bush and wilderness areas of New Zealand are how he came to love being at one with and observing nature so closely.
