Beatrix Dobie


Beatrix was good friends with fellow contemporary artist Esther Barker (later Ester Hope) they painted together in the Mackenzie Country.  Both leaving New Zealand to study abroad at the Slade school of art in London at the same time in 1911.  Beatrix returned to New Zealand after 1914-18 first world war and exhibited with the Canterbury Society of Arts 1919-26.  Many of her painting were of horses.  Her work is represented in the Auckland City Art Gallery.  Born daughter of H.B. Dobbie, later changing her name to Dobie.  She married an engineer with the French Army in Tunisia called Rene Vernon (becoming Mrs Vernon) and lived in Sfax.
